Richard Mayfield, Ruskin County, Texas
I am the grandson of
Houston Mayfield, born in Smith County, Texas, May
5th, 1880. He was the second (of 9) children born to
Thomas Mayfield and Ella Martin-Mayfield. The oldest
child (a son) was named Milet or Miles or Miller. The
other children, in birth order, were: Johnnie,
Cornelia, Fannie, Hattie, Emmit. Thomas, Jr. and
Leonard. All are thought to have been born in the
Smith County, Texas area. The family migrated to
Oklahoma before 1900. I am attempting to identify
Thomas' father. When examining the 1880 Smith County
Census Records I noticed a Richard Mayfield, 70 years
of age, born in Tennessee. In the same census
Thomas'father is listed as born in Tennessee. Also,
Thomas' brother, Roland, list his father's birthplace
as Tennessee. Could it be that Richard is the father
of Thomas and Roland thereby making him my great-great
grandfather? Any confirmation will greatly
appreciated. Likewise for any information on possible
Mayfield kin. Thanks.

Rosalind (Rosalynd) Hills Cemetary
I am trying to find
the cemetary where my great-grandmother was buried. I
am not sure if it is an Africa-American cemetary, but
it probably was at the time. She was funeralized in
1956 or 1957. I can't remember which as I was a small
child at the time. I also know the church: Ephesus
Seventh Day Adventist Church. It is located on W 123rd
Street in New York City, but I haven't been able to
get them. The reason I remember the cemetary's name is
because my mother's name is Rosalind, and before she
passed away, I asked her where my g-grandmother was
buried. Sorry to say, she couldn't tell me where it
was. I think it is an African-American cemetary,
because things were still the same. (colored only)
back then.
If anyone knows where
this cemetary is, would you drop me a line? It has to
be in the tri-state area: NY, NJ or CT.
Thanks,

Looking for info about Lucy Vance of Chickasaw, Ms.
My grgrandmother Lucy
lived n Chickasaw Mississippi. I am trying to find her
gravesite and further my genealogy of the Vance
family. Her daughter Adell Vance is my grandmother.
Lucy had a son by her slaveowner Ed Vance. Adell is
thought to have been born about 1898. Since there were
no records kept this is an estimate. In finding Lucy's
gravesite perhaps I will be able to find some
information about the women in my family. This has
proven to be an impossible feat because black people
would not talk about thir past. If anybody can help me
with this search I would be so grateful. I only know
what has been stated about the Mississppi past.

Cemeteries containing graves before the elimination
of slave laws heathen
You may wish to
expand your project to take into account burial sites
of Africans before the elimination of slave laws or
codes. This is called to your attention because
Africans considered "slaves" were buried at
times in Christian cemeteries if they were converted
from what many used in a demeaning way as
"heathens" to Christians. This is noted
because there was little or no regard for the cultural
diversity and way of life of Africans by Europeans or
the African Continent.
Racial exclusion
extended to the burial ground as Africans were
excluded from this service. In 17th and 18th C. burial
sites in the United Kingdom you will find evidence of
Africans being buried in cemeteries reserved for
whites. This evidence extends throughout the British
Commonwealth. Geographically before the War of 1776
most of the US and the Caribbean was claimed by the
British. This may have implications for the methods
used to examine gravesites for that period. In order
to avoid restrictions on the sale of slaves many
owners made "private" arrangements for
chattel slaves to be conveyed and sold between the
various Caribbean islands and the US. They would in
the course of travel bring with them their burial
traditions, what they could recall, from Africa.
You will also find
some grave stones in the Caribbean with information
that would indicate that the person concerned is an
African. In rurial areas of the Caribbean Islands
there are many interesting family grave sites that
belong to African familites who for many generation
have entombed their families on the land which they
own. I have had the opportunity to visit many by
accident and design. You have a wider social example in
Jamaica in the case of the Maroons who have a State
within the State of Jamaica and of course have
traditions for the burial of those who decease.
In the course of
remembering and finding the resting place of our
ancestors we shouldnot limit ourselves. If we do so
neither our souls nor theirs will rest. Such work can
only be entered into if we know ourselves and
continually strive to unfold and be at peace with
ourselves and amongst our communities so that we can
continue to build and protect ourselves and our
children for the future.
Thank you for the
opportunity to comment.

research the African American history of Gallatin
County, Kentucky. I have current listings for the IOOF/Second

An item of interest
perhaps. Across from the Park Ridge Cemetery is
located the former Park Ridge School, which was built
in 1923/24 by the Rosenwald Foundation. It was a one
teacher school. The church now uses it as a dining
hall. Very few people know or appreciates the

Tracking Questions
After purchasing a
house and land that goes back to 1769 in Maryland,
much time has been spent tracking its history. The
previous owner has passed down all papers/photos as
was done to her previously. I have a picture of the
person known as 'Aunt Bettie' who was said to have
been the slave during the 1800's. The only known facts
are that she was paid her freedom money and stayed as
she was 'part of the family.'
I have become
obsessed with finding information about her and very
much need to eventually locate her grave so that I can
place flowers on it. Aunt Bettie had a very loving
face, and appears to have been a strong woman with
large working hands. The picture hangs in a respectful
spot where I see her every day. I very much want to
know what her past and future were all about.
Where can I start to
locate where a black former slave might have been
burried? Were they burried? How can I locate black
churches in the area? I am a white male, and hesitant
that asking questions like these may be hurtful to
some because of the past, but very much need to find
out about Aunt Bettie.
Any information as to
where I might begin would be very much appreciated.
Thanks Much in
Advance.

Laurel Grove South Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia
I do not see historic
Laurel Grove South Cemetery in your listings of
historic African American cemeteries. Laurel Grove
South is an 147 year old cemetery with graves dating
from 1799 (which were moved from an old burial site
when Laurel Grove opened in 1853). Interred there are
Black Union and Black Confederate soldiers, Black
educators who secretly taught slave children before
the Civil War. Additionally, Andrew Bryan is interred
there as he was the founder of the oldest continuous
Black Baptist Congregation in America when he founded
the First Colored Baptist Church on January 20, 1788,
which today is known as First Bryan and First African
Baptist Churches (they stem from the congregation of
Andrew Bryan after the churches split into two
congregations in 1832)in Savannah, Georgia. The church
property on which First Bryan Baptist Church is
located is the oldest continuosly owned piece of
Baptist Church property in America (1793).
Additionally, Black Recontruction members of the
Georgia General Assembly are interred there (James
Porter, Ulysses L. Houston, and James Merilus Simms.
Laurel Grove South Cemetery received a historic marker
from the historic marker program of the Georgia
Historical Society on January 29, 2000.

Caleb and Nancy Williams
I'm doing research on
my family in Mississippi. My g, g, grandparents were
Caleb and Nancy Williams. They are listed among the
free inhabitants of Winston County, Mississippi in the
1850 census. They had three daughters, Antonett (Nettie),
Carrie Anne and Catherine. The family was located in
Grenada, Tieplant or Glenwire MS. When we were there
in 1990 for a Roberts/Ford Family reunion we visited a
family cemetery where Nancy Williams was buried. We
had to cross someone's land to reach it. An elderly
relative, who is now deceased, cared for it and I
wonder if it still exists.

Weakley County Tennessee. I have relatives burried in Beech
Grove Cemetary. This is located between the towns
of Greenfield and Dresden.
My greatgrand mother
Louisa Ward was burried there around 1949. She was 109
years of age. Her maiden name was Brassfield. The
Brassfield family was her slave owners. Her husband
lost his life in the bottom of a well. When he
suffercated. And was covered over. The called the
reason "Black Damp". (lack of oxygen). Only
known as "Pap". He was half white. Their
daughter Minnie Mae was my grandmother. Born
Jan.1,1883.
Also a few miles
north of Beech Grove Cemetary is the Jones Chapel
Cemetary. Where my Greatgrand father was burried
by the name of Levy Thompson. Levy was purchased from
the Nailing family. Levy fathered 22 children by
Frances. Half of these were born in slavery. Bell and
Wiley were twins. Bell was my grandfather. Born
Feb.9,1883 .
George Thompson was
the youngest brother of Bell Thompson, who served in
World War One. Later moved to St. Louis, Mo. where he
married Tenola. Died in the 60's and was burried in
Jefferson Barrick Military Cemetary.George was born in
the 1890's.
I hope this
information will be of help to someone. I hope someone
can be a help to me. Peace,

Cemetery in Spartanburg South Carolina
I live in Michigan
but am searching for ancestors in South Carolina. I
visited South Carolina about 8 years ago. I visited a
church called Shady Grove (not sure of the
denomination but I think Baptist). Anyway there were
woods off to the left of the church if facing the
front door of church. I was told that this was
overgrowth of a black cemetary. I don't know how far
into the woods the graves go but just know that this
is a cemetary.
As I don't live in
the state, I thought maybe if I could list the fact
that the cemetary is there, a volunteer living in that
area might wish to check it out. Someone said there is
an Upper Shady Grove and a Lower Shady Grove. I don't
know if both have cemetaries or not. I was told that
the black that are buried are buried at Lower Shady
Grove.
THERE IS HISTORY IN
OUR ROOTS!!! Sincerely,

Old Shiloh Cemetary
I am looking for an
old cemetery near Caledonia, MS, where my GG
Grandparents were buried. I am told it is on the
property of an old small church which they referred to
as Shiloh. This cemetery also had a road built either
on top of it or through the middle. The graves may be
unmarked by now. I think my ancestors were buried
there around 1875. Green Berry Darnel & Sarah
Elizabeth Darnel. I would appreciate nay help you
could give me about this.

NC Cemeteries
Here are two all
black cemetaries in North Carolina:
Elm City, North
Carolina
From Rt. 301, take
the Elm City Exit (between Rocky Mount and Wilson).
The cemetary is located behind the Alcatel Plant on
Parker Street and can be seen from the roadway. Access
is gained by driving down a dirt road on the left side
of the plant near the fenced in parking area to the
left of the plant building.
Wilson, North
Carolina
Rest Haven
Cemetary is located just off Rt. 301 by turning on
to the Lane Street Extension near the intersection of
Rt. 264 and Rt. 301.
I am still
desperately searching for the "colored"
cemetary on the old Dr. Mercer Farm in the Temperance
Hall/Mercer area of Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
My husband and I actually found the old Mercer
"big" house last week (on the main road) but
believe the "colored" cemetary is back off
the road in the woods. It is a HUGE property and we
need better directions. If you should come across any
information concerning this cemetary, please let me
know.

Found a cemetery no one knows about
Hello, I'm not sure
if you can help me but here is my story. I work for a
large homebuilder in Charlotte, NC. They recently
purchased about a 275 acre parcel of land in Union
County in a town called Weddington. We were told a
gravesite was found by the surveyors in which
approximately 180 or so people were buried we were
also told that upon researching this there were no
records to be found. A coworker and I went into the
woods to find it and discovered that all the graves
except one had only a small rock for a marker. The one
headstone we did find with writing said: Jane M. Simes
born April 18th 1950 died ------- 1888. People I've
talked to seem to think it most likely is a slave
graveyard. there is a church near by and a white
cemetery. Could you help me try to find who these
people were or direct me to a resource that could?
Thanks for your time,

Looking for gravesites of Tom and Silvia White in
Oklahoma cemetery
I am looking for my
mothers parents. Their name is Tom White and Silvia
Gray White. Mother told me that she thought Silvia was
buried in "the welfare" cemetery. She said
that welfare buried most black, poor people. My mom
was taken in by a aunt to raise at the age of 2 and a
half, so things are really sketchy. Silvia had 3
brothers - Sam Gray, Ernest Gray, Charlie Gray And a
sister Hanna. My mom was born in Luther Oklahoma she
is not sure but she thinks they moved from Luther to
OK City. If you can help me it would be greatly
appreciate!!

AA Day Cemetery
Hi,
My name is Michael
Bridges and I am the 3rd great grandson of FPOC
Soloman Day b. 1788 in Southampton Co., VA. He
migrated with his brother David to Logan Co., OH in
1839 where he purchased 125 acres of land. On April
19, 1842 he donated 1/2 acre of this land to the
Deacons of the Regular Baptist Church also known as
the Mill Creek Baptist Church for the purposes of a
meeting house. This 1/2 acre was eventually used
solely as a burial ground and it is said that he felt
that since the whites in the area would not let blacks
be buried in their cemeteries then blacks must have
their own. This cemetery houses many surnames that
have been recognized as part of a large free black
community that migrated to Logan Co. from VA and NC.
The cemetery inscriptions are already online and can
be obtained from the following website:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohlogan/cemjeda.html
The cemetery is
located in Logan Co., OH Jefferson Twp and situated on
the south side of Township Road 127 west of Township
Road 129. It is in fairly good condition with the
grass being cut and the area fenced in, however many
of the markers are broken.

St. Paul Cemetery - Shellmound (Leflore County)
Miss.
Dear Sir/Madam:
I have been trying to
secure cemetery records for St. Paul in Shellmound (Leflore
County) Miss. for years now and no one seems to know
who I should contact. As late as November 1997, my
grand-uncle was buried there. The Church and at one
time there was a school is no longer there.
Has anyone considered
seeking these records and transcribing them? If I can
be of any help from Cleveland, Ohio let me know.
Thanks.

Colored American Cemetery, Hamilton County Ohio
I am doing my family
history. And after acquiring death certificates of
relatives who died in Ohio. And the ones I have so far
my relatives numbering 9 were buried in the Colored
American Cemetery on Duck Creek Rd. This is from Dec.
1928 to August 1957. My cousin who lives in Hamilton
County has not been able to find it.He says that
Interstate I-71 now runs through it, and that perhaps
it has been destroyed. I would appreciate it if anyone
knows how I might be able to find out what happened to
it. Perhaps the name has been changed. But most likely
it was destroyed.

Help

Nigger Run Cemetery, Gilmore Twsp, Greene County,
PA
Dear Friends ...
I would like to tell
you of "Nigger Run Cemetery" ... located
along State Route 30010, Gilmore Township, Greene
County, S.W. Pennsylvania. The cemetery is recorded on
a 1935 survey (available on request ... please include
snail mail address) ... is close to "Nigger Run
Road .. now called Negro Run Road, Township Route 410
... which of course parallels Nigger Run ... and at
the north end of Nigger Run Road, there once stood
Nigger Run School House. The cemetery, the Run and the
Road are there for all to see. The school is gone now
and we are trying to determine its actual location.
The cemetery has one
large tombstone but time and the weather has removed
the name of what the survey says is a White Man.
Several smaller unmarked fieldstones are said to mark
the graves of about 30 Negroes. About 30 Negroes ...
no names, just about 30 Negroes ... ! They are
someones loved ones, perhaps (more than likely), my
loved ones ... those who traveled and lived before me
and made my existence and my freedom possible. They
did contribute to African American freedom in Greene
County...in Pennsylvania ... and in the United States
of America ... and these "about 30 Negroes"
need to be recognized and their story told and should
never be forgotten.
Who are they? The
answer to that question may be a difficult one to find
but we shall try. Thank you for accepting this bit of
African American history.

Slave Cemetery in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana
Dear Sirs/Madams:
I am a descendant of
William Allen Lane who owned slaves on a plantation in
East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and I have developed
a close friendship with a family who descend from his
slaves. In the last two years we have shared an
incredible of amount of history. We know the location
of a slave cemetery which is still used. It shows on
maps but its ownership is up in the air. It is semi
maintained by the local governing body, the Police
Jury.
We want to formalize
its status and work toward a census, some fencing and
better maintenance. Can you help us with some pointers
on how to get started. Thank you.
